Included on this page is some key information (including homelearning) for both grown-ups and children. Of course, if you have any questions or queries, don't hesitate to come and see me (Mr McDonald) - I'm always keen to meet and talk with you!

 

Days to Remember

 

  • At this time, our PE days are Monday and Thursday. However, pupils should have their PE kit in school from Monday to Friday. As pupils are now in Year Four and developing more independence, ideally they should be taking responsibility to remembering their own PE kit.
  • Home Learning (including Spellings) is given out on Fridays to give pupils the opportunity to use the weekend to tackle it. This should be returned by Wednesday at the latest. Further information can be found below.
  • Parent Mornings are on Tuesday and Thursday. Please feel free to come in and share the morning with your child!

 

Home Learning

 

As mentioned previously, homework is set on Friday such that pupils can complete it over the weekend. Homework can then be handed in on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Homework handed in after Wednesday will be marked as late and pupils may be required to complete it on Thursday lunchtime if it has still not been completed. Occasionally, extenuating circumstances may result in homework being handed in late. Don't worry about these times as it will be clear from other weeks that homework is being completed well. As with PE kits, I will be encouraging pupils to take responsibility for their own homework as part of their new, age-related independence.

 

Although homework will be linked to learning in school, it is designed to be challenging at times. Pupils may struggle with parts and this is OK; the effort they put into to trying to solve the problems will develop their skills. If your child is finding the work particularly hard however, please encourage them to come to Homework Club on Monday lunchtime where I can work with them to help. As a general rule, the formal homework (not including spellings, times table practice, or reading) should not exceed thirty minutes a week – they spend enough time studying in school and really don’t need more of it at home. If it is taking too long, I would stress that your child should come to Homework Club that week, rather than continuing to struggle at home.

 

Spellings are also set each week, but this will be slightly different to previous years. Spellings will be linked to our in-class spelling lessons where pupils will be learning rules. As a result, the spelling homework may include a challenge which requires pupils to apply these rules to deduce the actual set of spellings they will receive a test on.

 

To coincide with the deadline to hand in homework, the spelling tests will take place on a Wednesday. Pupils who have not learnt the spellings may be required to practice through breaktime. That is not to say that a pupil who performs badly on the spelling test must stay in – everyone has a panic in a test at some point! If a pupil has performed badly in a spelling test but can clearly use the rules well and can verbally spell words to me following that rule, then the pupil has completed the homework and learnt the rule. There is no reason for the pupil to miss their breaktime because of a test. I stress this as I am aware that spelling tests can cause a lot of stress and pressure for some pupils (usually the ones who have nothing to worry about) and really, they are only to give me an indication of who has learnt the spelling rule. A bad test doesn’t mean a pupil doesn’t know it well.

 

In addition, pupils are expected to be reading at home, preferably to an adult. This reading does help them and mirrored with the lessons in school, it can have a huge impact. Ideally, when reading with your child please try to focus on growing their vocabulary and ensuring that they are reading punctuation. Throughout the year, I will be hosting some exciting reading events for both pupils and their grown-ups.

 

Finally, pupils are expected to be very fluent in their times tables up to 12 by the end of Year Four. Having just taught some of Year Six in their SATs, I cannot stress enough how important this skill is. Whilst your children and I will be working hard on this in school, practising at home will be invaluable to your child.
